The development of HemaGel

The exceptional medical agent Hemagel owes its unique structure and efficacy to the scientists from the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech republic.

This top scientific institution has been involved in research for half a century and it has given rise to one the most famous Czech inventions of all times- contact lenses.

The history of the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry (ĂšMCH) began in the 1950s. The successful symposium on macromolecules held in Prague in 1957 was an impulse to the founding of a specialised institution focusing on this rapidly developing scientific field. The ĂšMCH was founded in 1959 as part of the Academy of Sciences and its first director was Professor Otto Wichterle, whose name will always be linked with the invention and subsequent production of soft contact lenses and intra-ocular lenses.

Under the directorship of Prof. Wichterle, the ĂšMCH focused from the very beginning and with the same intensity on polymer chemistry and physics. Great stress was placed on maintaining a balance between theoretical research and practical application of results in practice. The truly exceptionally high credit of the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry is borne out by the fact that Prague was the only city in the world honoured to hold the IUPAC International Symposium on Macromolecular Chemistry three times (in the years 1957, 1965 and 1992).

Intensive scientific and research activities continue unabated. On January 1, 2007, the institution acquired the legal form of a public research organisation. In the past years, the ĂšMCH has focused on three principal areas: research of biomacromolecular systems, research into the dynamics and self-organisation of molecular and supra-molecular polymer systems and the issue of preparing, characterising and applying new polymers with a directed structure and properties. The ĂšMCH places great stress also on educational activities and organises doctorate programs in polymer sciences in cooperation with universities.
